As part of their Flanders Research Information Space Data Governance program, the Flemish Department of Economy, Science and Innovation has been mandated to collect – from all research and educational institutes in Flanders – timely reports on their innovation output. In the DG operating model, reports are composed of assets of type FRIS Business Object (FRISBO). There are four core FRISBOs: Person, Publication, Project, Organization; and they have many subtypes.

Asset ‘Book’ is an instance of the FRISBO asset type that specializes FRISBO ‘Publication’. A view on FRISBO ‘Book’ is illustrated below: each FRISBO is further defined in terms of possible Properties (shown by the hierarchy view for “has property” relation under Book) and Identifiers (shown in the column “Identified By”).

For every reporting period, only certain subsets of Properties and Identifiers are relevant and mandatory. Hence we need a way to answer the following traceability question which leads us to define a new asset type “Mandatory Property Constraint”:

• What are the Mandatory Property Constraints relevant for Report  ‘October 2014’?
• Which Properties are mandatory for FRISBO ‘Book’?
• Which Identifiers are mandatory for FRISBO ‘Book’?

We also have a sample spreadsheet with familiar examples for this case. This means we can continue our analysis by following the first step of OMDP Step 1 – Transform Familiar Examples into Asset Types, Attribute Types and Relation Types. Following an excerpt.

We read out as follows:

• The Asset of type Mandatory Property Rule with Name “Book Mandatory Property Rule Extra” has attribute Definition with value “The following properties of Book are mandatory: Title,  Publication Date, Publisher Name”.
• The Asset of type Property Mandatory Rule with Name “Book Mandatory Property Rule Extra”  has attribute Definition with value “The following properties of Book are mandatory: Title,  Publication Date, Publisher Name”.
• The Asset of type Property Mandatory Rule with Name “Book Mandatory Property Rule Extra” has relation “has subject” with Property with name “Book” under Domain with name “Research Output Glossary” within Community with name “Business Object Management Community”
• The Asset of type Property Mandatory Rule with Name “Book Mandatory Property Rule Extra” has relation “has object” with Property with name “Book Series Name” under Domain with name “Research Output Glossary” within Community with name “Business Object Management Community”
  

Based on that, we devise the following extension to the DG operating model.
